KaVo Kerr Group and the University of the Pacific ArthurA.Dugoni School of Dentistry help equip and train the next generation of dentists n“Whatever good things we build end up building us.” Jim Rohn’s words are a perfect post- script to the incredible efforts undertaken by The University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in its journey to find, develop and fully live into its new location in downtown San Francisco. There is a boldness to the purpose and planning by the school, underscored by a willingness to admit that the education haschanged—ischanging—andthattobe aworldclasslearninginstitutionrequires you to adapt and lay a groundwork that facilitates adapting again and again. Designed with tomorrow in mind One of the first things you notice at the new campus is how beautiful it is. The esthetics do an amazing job of disguising the most meritorious aspect of the design: Its ability to evolve. “We have a strong sense of where things are going, in the profession and in education, but long-term, things are unclear,”Dr.ParagKachalia,Vice-Chairof PreclinicalEducation,ResearchandTech- nology at the University of Pacific School of Dentistry, explained. “We didn’t want to lock ourselves into a physical space in terms of design or functionality.” The expectation that technology will continue to advance and play an increas- ingly large role in the way that treatment plans are designed and executed led to a significant investment in a smart, adaptable data infrastructure at the university. “Equipment itself is only the tip of the iceberg. We needed a data infrastructure that would allow equipment and technol- ogy to communicate with one another and to easily share data when necessary,” Kachalia said. “This actually became a major differentiator in choosing a vendor to outfit the new facility. We needed a partner who understood that equipment is more than just a good chair. We needed someone with the intellectual capital to differentiate from traditional models and procedures. The KaVo Kerr Group plat- form of products has innovation that we recognize as providing a complete solu- tion — from Kerr TotalCare CaviWipes to the KaVo ARCTICA milling system. We thought, when a company understands that, they’ll be in the best position to help us approach innovation in a multi- disciplinary way.” A simulation lab without equal As a school that positions itself as an innovator in dental education, there were numerous areas where the University of the Pacific team could have invested in ordertosolidifyitsinnovationcredentials. Walking through the campus its clear that dental technology — digital imaging, intraoral scanning, caries detection and more — will be a tangible part of each stu- 5 University of the Pacific.
