In: Lang, N. P. & Karring, T (eds) Proceedings of the 1st European Workshop on Periodontology, pp. 365-369: London Quintessence Publishing Co. Ltd. About the author Vavalekas Michail graduated from the University “Gr. T. Popa” in 2001, and continued with the advanced educa- tion in general dentistry from “Carol Davila” from 2002 to 2005, before re- turning to Greece to work in a private office. During the period 2008-2010 he has been specialising in the depart- ment of Periodontics and Implant den- tistry at New York University College of Dentistry as a student and a clinical assistant fellow where he got involved in different clinical and research ac- tivities. page 17DTß infections should be focused both on infection control of the lesion, detoxification of the im- plant surface, and on regen- eration procedures. Treatment options can be surgical or non- surgical.Itwasobservedthatnon- surgical treatment of peri- implantitis was unpredictable, while the use of chemical agents such as chlorhexidine had only limited effects on clinical and microbiological parameters. Adjunctive local or systemic antibiotics were shown to reduce bleeding on probing and prob- ing depths and some beneficial effects of laser therapy on peri- implantitis have been shown, but this approach needs to be further evaluated. Despite treatment and re-treatment of lesions, estab- lishing an adequate healthy envi- ronment was found to be difficult since inflammation can be still present in a significant number of patients.
