business 25IDS 2011 – 23. The new NiTi file system WaveOne from DENTSPLY Mail- lefer operates by using re- ciprocating motion. According to the company, this allows the root canal to be prepared us- ing only one file whilereducingtheriskofthescrew- ing-in effect and file fracture at the same time. These NiTi files are pre- sterilised and individually blister packed. Their single-use technique is to increased safety against frac- tures and cross-contamination. The WaveOne system was designed by DENTSPLY Mail- lefer in col- laboration with world lead- ingendodontists. The instruments are made from highly loadable M-Wire nickel-tita- nium—a special development from DENTSPLY. The technique is based onalternating,extendedfor- wardrotationinthecutting direction and shorter rota- tion in the opposite direc- tion, which allows the files to slide into the root canal while re- taining its anatomy. The optimised rotation angle is to reduce the risk of the screw- ing-ineffect and file fracture. In comparison with root canal preparation using con- tinuous rotary instruments, the WaveOne files shorten the total preparation time by up to 40 per cent, the company said. As only one file is required, preparation of the files and laborious instrument changes are no longer nessessary. Inadditiontothereciprocalmode, the pre-programmed WaveOne motor also provides continuous movement for using other proven handpiece file systems from DENTSPLY Maille- fer,e.g.ProTaperUniversal.Anumber of 15 freely programmable memory locations allow the operator scope for individual settings. Colour-coded paper and gutta- percha points as well as obturators are to complete the WaveOne system. It is also supposed to eliminate the discomfort of conven- tional impression-taking and improve the patient experience, they added. In the iD3, patented technology of confocalmicroscopy(opticalmethod)is combined with the acknowl- edgement of the Moiré effect (mathematical methods).Thedeviceisable to produce accurate 3-D images of the dental arches which can then be stored and shared with dental labs as elec- tronic data thus eliminating most of the logistics and costs associated with traditional techniques that involve ma- terials, casts and copies. Optical acquisition systems have proved to be more accurate and repro- ducible than any other mechanical method based on traditionally used casting materials. The iD3 is able to scan the upper andlowerarchesseparatelyanddetect the exact geometric relationship be- tween them, the company said. The dif- ferent sections are then automatically combined at the end of the process. A complete scan of the arch can also be carried out in several stages. According to MyRay, the iD3 keeps the sapphire glass of the tip at a temperature slightly higher than that of the oral cavity during intraoral scanningwhichissupposedtoprevent condensation caused by the natural humidity levels present. There is no need to immobilise the handpiece in pre-set positions or ob- serve a fixed distance between the in- strument and the surface of the teeth. The handpiece is equipped with an advanced scanning system comprised of a sophisticated mobile-lens optical unit, alaserprojector, adigitalsensorto gather the data and a powerful proces- sor for real-time processing of the scan during acquisition. The high capture rate of up to 14 scans per second will al- low the user to gather a huge amount of informationandconstructaprecisesur- face map also known as a “point cloud”. According to MyRay, the iD3 scan- ner is a revolutionary product that was developed to expand the company’s range of systems specifically designed for a new dental imaging experience. At IDS 2011, the company has announced to showcase more of their recent inno- vations including the wireless digital Xpod, a portable device with lithium polymer batteries that captures high resolutionX-rayimagesforexamination on a wide integrated touch-screen, as wellastheX7Hyperionpanoramicunit that can accommodate a teleradiogra- phy arm to perform ultra-fast scans of variable fields of view.
